ChordLab Privacy Notice

This notice explains what data ChordLab handles, why, and who it is shared with. It is written to be read, not to hide behind legalese. ChordLab is designed to keep your data on your own computer; the only information that leaves your machine is what's needed to check your licence.
1. Who we are
ChordLab is developed and published by Charles-Antoine Pouliot. For any privacy question, correction, or deletion request, email charles@chordlab.ca.
Charles-Antoine Pouliot operates in Quebec, Canada. This notice is provided in the spirit of Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector ("Law 25") and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and applies wherever you use the app. We collect the minimum needed to run the licence and nothing more.
2. What leaves your computer
The only network activity in ChordLab is licence validation. When you activate a licence key, and
periodically when the app re-checks that the key is still valid, ChordLab sends the following to our
licensing provider, Lemon Squeezy (api.lemonsqueezy.com):

That is the complete list of what ChordLab transmits. There is no analytics or tracking SDK in the app — it talks only to the Lemon Squeezy licensing endpoints, and only about your licence.
Your email: ChordLab does not ask you for your email. The email tied to your licence is the one you used when you obtained the key from us / Lemon Squeezy. During validation, Lemon Squeezy returns that email to the app so it can show you which account is active; ChordLab stores it locally (see below). The app never uploads a separately-collected email.
3. Third-party processor: Lemon Squeezy
Licence keys and any payment are handled by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as our merchant of record and licensing service. When ChordLab validates your key, Lemon Squeezy processes the licence key and device identifier described above under its own privacy policy: https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/privacy. We do not control Lemon Squeezy's independent data practices.
4. What stays on your computer (and is never uploaded)
Everything you create and configure in ChordLab is stored only on your device:
- Your libraries — voicings, progressions, melodies, practice history, and settings — in
libraries.xml. - Your cached licence — key, device instance, the returned email, and the last-validated
timestamp — in
license.key.
Both live in a Chordy folder:

~/Library/Chordy/ - Windows:
%APPDATA%\Chordy\(e.g.C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Chordy\)
(The folder is named "Chordy" for historical reasons — it belongs to ChordLab.) Deleting this folder removes that local data. None of it is transmitted to us or anyone else.
5. What we do NOT collect
- No usage analytics or telemetry.
- No upload of your practice data, MIDI, or libraries.
- No advertising identifiers, tracking pixels, or cookies.
- No microphone, location, or contacts access.
6. Feedback, bug reports, and Discord (optional)
During the beta we invite feedback via our Discord server and by email. Participating is entirely voluntary. Anything you choose to share there (messages, logs, screenshots) is handled under Discord's own policies and the feedback terms in our End User Licence Agreement. Don't send us anything you consider sensitive.
7. Retention
- Licence data (key, email, device instances) is retained by Lemon Squeezy for as long as your licence exists, per their policy.
- Local data on your computer stays until you delete it (delete the
Chordyfolder, or uninstall).
8. Your choices and rights
- Access / correction / deletion: email charles@chordlab.ca and we'll help with any data we or our provider hold about your licence.
- Remove local data: delete the
Chordyfolder shown in section 4. - Release a device: if you hit the device limit, deactivate a device from within the app or contact us to free a slot.
9. Children
ChordLab is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
10. Changes to this notice
As ChordLab moves from beta to general release, this notice may change (for example, if we add optional features that require new data). The effective date at the top will be updated, and material changes will be announced through our normal beta channels.
This is a beta privacy notice provided for transparency; it is not legal advice. It will be reviewed before ChordLab's paid, general-availability launch.
